So you’ve ‘walked the walls’, gone to the top of Mt Srd, paddled a kayak around the coast, cycled through vineyards, explored the Old Towns museums, time for a day off right? Just off the coast of Dubrovnik is the small Island of Lokrum and its the perfect place to escape the crowds of the Old Town. A ferry boat (around £6 return) leaves Dubrovnik harbour every hour (more regularly in July and August) and takes around 15 minutes to get to the Island. No overnight stays are allowed so check the return times when you land. The Island has lots of pine, cypress and olive trees and a ‘salt filled’ inland lake if you fancy a dip. There’s a botanical garden, a ruined monastery, a nudist beach and plenty of forest walks.A small cafe also serves snacks and drinks. There are places to swim too along the coast (mainly on the south east side of the island), but the beaches are pretty rocky so bring something to sit on. Alternatively find yourself a quiet cove overlooking the Old Town, get the picnic out on the rocks and watch the boats going in and out of the harbour.
